Men’s Conditions

Why Physiotherapy?

Male pelvic health physiotherapy is a specialized branch of physical therapy designed to diagnose and treat dysfunction in the pelvic floor muscles, which support the bladder, bowel, and sexual organs. It is essential for treating chronic pelvic pain, urinary/bowel incontinence, constipation, erectile dysfunction, and aiding recovery after prostate surgery.

Physiotherapy is a non-invasive, first-line approach to improving quality of life, reducing pain, and regaining functional control in the pelvic region

Conditions Treated

Post-Prostatectomy

It is common to experience bladder incontinence following prostate surgery but it will usually be short-lasting. However, sometimes men will need physiotherapy to help them get dry again. Urinary incontinence can affect your quality of life, but we have the experience to help you overcome these symptoms. Pelvic floor strengthening exercises are a proven way to treat incontinence, and we will also advise you on weaning off pads, using clamps, improving your physical condition, and addressing erectile dysfunction. E.D. can be an issue following prostatectomy, and we are able to give advice on how to overcome this from specific pelvic exercises, medications and the use of a pump.
Where possible, we will use non-invasive methods of assessing the muscle, such as real-time ultrasound or external palpation.
We also see men pre-surgery to help them to find and train the correct muscles so that you can start the exercise programme sooner post-surgery.

Pelvic Pain

Male pelvic pain is effectively treated by our expert men's health physiotherapist. Pelvic pain may be experienced in the genitals, the rectum/anus, lower back and abdomen and can be accompanied (though not always) by painful urination and/or ejaculation as well as difficult bowel emptying. It is often due in part to overactive pelvic floor muscles and other musculoskeletal factors, which we will help you to address.

Our first goal is to help you to understand and manage your own symptoms so we use a combination of education, stretching and exercise, pelvic floor downtraining and manual therapy to achieve this goal.

Hard flaccid syndrome

Hard flaccid syndrome is common, an often-acquired condition characterised by a persistently firm, semi-rigid, or cold, numb-feeling penis when flaccid, frequently causing significant psychological distress. Often linked to pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, nerve damage, or trauma (e.g., from excessive masturbation/jolting), symptoms include pain, erectile dysfunction, and urinary issues
We use Low-intensity shockwave therapy or medications to manage pain and improve blood flow.

Erectile Dysfunction

Sandra sees men post-prostate surgery for ED. She sees a lot of men with vascular ED. Sandra understands erectile dysfunction, is comfortable around it and knows that not all erectile dysfunction is the same and needs an individualised approach.

Shockwave therapy

Low-intensity shockwave therapy is an excellent and scientifically proven method for treating erectile dysfunction.

Low-Intensity Shockwave Therapy for Erectile Dysfunction is a pain-free treatment that improves blood flow, regenerates important blood vessels and nerves, and more, without the need for anything painful or an anaesthetic.

If you cannot maintain an erection during penetrative sex, want to pursue treatments that don’t involve any medication or miss the general spontaneity in having sex, then low-intensity shockwave therapy may be the treatment for you, and it can also be done while maintaining an existing medication regimen for erectile dysfunction. Book a video consultation to discuss what options are available to you. Book on www.reliefcharteredphysiotherapy.com

Our shockwave therapy equipment

There are many more Radial Shockwave Machines in use, largely because they are much more affordable. Focused Shockwave, however, is the scientifically proven machine of choice for the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction. Whoever your practitioner is, it is important to confirm that they are using focused shockwave, not radial shockwave.

Radial shockwave

Focused shockwave

No expense is spared at our clinic to support patient rehabilitation. We have the Focus Chattanooga Machine, a focused shockwave therapy machine, the industry leader.

How much is Shockwave for Erectile Dysfunction?

We use a 6-treatment session protocol. This is the most common protocol used in the scientific literature. We aim for 1 session per week for 6 weeks.
The cost of Treatment is €200 per session. We are currently the most affordable option in the country. This is a pain-free procedure, and you will be comfortable for the whole session. It takes about 10 minutes for each treatment.
